How to Scan a Car Title and Registration on iPhone
Selling a car, moving to a new state, refinancing a loan, filing an insurance claim: each one ends with someone asking for a copy of the title, the registration, or both. These are documents you rarely handle and cannot easily replace, and the title in particular has security printing, fine type, and a back side that matters as much as the front. This guide shows how to scan both on an iPhone so every number is readable, how to keep the copies organized, and when a copy is not enough.
The short version
- Scan both sides of the title. The back holds the assignment and transfer sections.
- Full page, in color, flat, no flash. Security print and colored backgrounds wash out under direct light.
- Check the VIN, plate and names at full zoom before you send anything.
- Built in: Notes or Files, Scan Documents. Scanner App: Scan with Camera, Color mode, both sides in one PDF, offline and without an account.
- A scan is a copy. Transfers usually need the original title, signed in ink.
When a copy works, and when it does not
| Situation | What is usually needed |
|---|---|
| Insurance quote or claim | A copy of the registration, sometimes the title |
| Refinancing or a loan application | A copy of the title and registration, uploaded |
| Selling privately | The original title, signed over; keep a scan of the signed title for your records |
| Registering in a new state | Usually the original title; a copy for your own file |
| Your records | Scans of both, stored where you can find them |
Rules vary by state and country, and lenders differ too. When a form says "copy", a clear scan is what it means. When it says "original", bring the paper.
Set up the page
- Unfold it and flatten it. Titles are often folded in a glovebox for years. Rest the page under a book for a few minutes so the creases do not cast shadows across numbers.
- Dark, plain surface. Most titles are printed on light security paper, and edge detection needs contrast.
- Light from the side, flash off. The patterned background and watermarks disappear under flash and take the faint print with them.
- Phone parallel to the page, with all four edges in the frame.
Method 1: The iPhone's built-in scanner
- In Notes, open a note, tap the attachment button, and choose Scan Documents. In Files, tap the More button and choose Scan Documents.
- Scan the front of the title, then turn it over and scan the back as a second page.
- Tap the filter button and choose Color, then save.
- Scan the registration as a separate document, so each one can be sent on its own.
Saving in Files keeps the scan out of a note that may sync, and puts it straight into a folder you can name.
Method 2: Scanner App
- Tap the plus button and choose Scan with Camera. A title is a full page, so the card tools are not needed.
- Capture the front, then the back as a second page of the same document.
- Keep the color mode on Color. Zoom in and check the VIN, the plate number and the owner names.
- Scan the registration as its own document. If it is a small card, the Scan ID Card tool puts both sides on one page.
- Tap Export and choose PDF, or JPG if a portal asks for images.
Scanner App works offline and without an account, and the scans stay on the iPhone until you export them. More about scanning full pages is on the document scanner page.
Keep them where you can find them
- One folder per vehicle, named by the car and plate, with the title, the registration, the insurance card and the purchase papers.
- Rescan when anything changes: a renewed registration, a lien released, a new address on the title.
- Treat them as sensitive. A title shows your name, address and VIN. Send it through the lender's or insurer's portal where you can, and do not leave copies in old emails.

Quick answers
How do I scan my car title on my iPhone?
Use Scan Documents in Notes or Files, or Scan with Camera in Scanner App. Scan the front and the back in color, with the flash off and all four edges in the frame.
Do I need to scan the back of a car title?
Yes. The back has the assignment and transfer sections, and any signatures or lien releases recorded there.
Can I use a copy of my title to sell my car?
Usually not. Ownership transfers generally require the original title signed in ink. Keep a scan of the signed title for your records.
Is a photo of my registration enough for insurance?
Often yes, as long as every detail is readable. A scan is more reliable than a photo because it is flat, cropped and evenly lit.
Should I scan the title and registration together?
Keep them as separate files. Different requests ask for different documents, and a separate file means you never send more than needed.
Both sides, every number readable
Flatten the page, light it from the side, scan both sides in color, and file it under the car. Download Scanner App, free to download, to scan titles, registrations and IDs on your iPhone, offline and without an account.
