How to Scan Multiple Pages Into One PDF on iPhone (Including Double-Sided)
A contract, a tax form, a school report, twelve pages of a rental agreement: most paperwork is more than one sheet, and the person asking for it wants one file, with the pages in the right order. An iPhone can do that without a flatbed scanner, in one continuous pass. The part that trips people up is not the scanning but the details around it: double-sided sheets, a page that needs a retake, a page you forgot, and a file that ends up too large to email. This guide covers the built-in scanner in Notes and Files, a scanner app for longer documents, and a method for double-sided pages that keeps the order right the first time.
The short version
- One scan session, many pages. In Notes or Files, Scan Documents keeps capturing page after page until you tap Save. The result is one PDF.
- Double-sided: scan front, flip, scan back, then the next sheet. Alternating is slower by seconds and saves reordering later.
- Check every page before saving. A retake inside the session is five seconds; a missing page found by the recipient is a week.
- For long documents, Scanner App keeps all pages in one document, lets you reorder them, add pages later, run text recognition, and export a named PDF, offline.
- Text-only pages in B/W or Grayscale keep the file small enough to email.
Before you scan: prepare the stack
- Remove staples and paper clips. A stapled corner casts a shadow and bends the page edge, which confuses edge detection.
- Put the pages in order and check the page numbers. It is the cheapest moment to fix order.
- Use a dark, plain surface and even light from a window or a ceiling lamp. Turn the flash off; it creates a bright spot on glossy paper.
- Keep a finished pile to one side, face down, so you never scan the same page twice.
Route 1: Notes or Files
The iPhone's own scanner is the same in both apps. Files is the better choice for a document you will send, because it saves the PDF straight into a folder instead of inside a note.
- In Files, open the folder you want, tap the More button, and choose Scan Documents. In Notes, open a note, tap the attachment button, and choose Scan Documents.
- Hold the phone over the first page. With the shutter on Auto, the page is captured as soon as the edges are found. Otherwise tap the shutter button.
- Swap the page and hold still for the next one. A counter of captured pages builds up at the bottom left.
- Tap the thumbnail at the bottom left to check a page. Retake it, drag the corners to fix the crop, or change the filter.
- Tap Save. All pages become one PDF.

Route 2: Scanner App, for longer documents
When a document runs past a few pages, or you need to fix the order and send it with a sensible name, a scanner app saves the back-and-forth.
- Tap the plus button and choose Scan with Camera. Capture the pages one after another; they all go into the same document.
- Open the document. Every page is listed as Page 1, Page 2, and so on, so a missing or doubled page is easy to spot.
- Tap Order to drag pages into the right sequence, and add more pages to the same document if one was missed.
- Choose a color mode per job: B/W or Grayscale for text, Color when stamps, signatures, or photos matter.
- Rename the document, then tap Export and choose PDF. Tap Recognize first if you want the text to be searchable later.

Double-sided pages without the reshuffle
Scanners with a feeder handle two-sided sheets automatically. On a phone you choose the order, and there are two ways to do it.

With the second method, turning the stack over reverses it, so the backs come out last page first. In an app that can reorder, drag each back behind its front. In Notes or Files, alternating is the safer choice.
Blank backs are worth skipping. A page that is empty on the reverse adds file size and makes the recipient scroll. Only scan a back if something is printed or written on it, including a signature or a handwritten note.
Books, booklets, and stapled reports
For anything bound, scan one page at a time, not the open spread. Hold the book open with two fingers at the outer edges, outside the frame, and angle the phone so it sits directly over the page you are capturing. The curve near the spine is the hardest part; pressing the book flat and keeping the page centered does more than any filter. Keeping a 20-page PDF small enough to send
- Text pages in B/W or Grayscale. The biggest single saving. Color is several times larger per page.
- Skip blank backs and duplicate pages.
- Split by purpose. A signed contract and its annexes can be two files if the upload form has a size limit.

Name it and file it
"Lease signed 2026-09.pdf" survives being downloaded, forwarded, and found again next year. "Scan 3.pdf" does not.
